“I Don’t Have Friends, Only Family” (Week 97)

Greetings from Lincoln! So I’m still here, but Elder Haynie has
officially left. My new, and final, companion, is Elder Jones from
Mesa, Arizona! He’s been out for about a year now, and is awesome. He
is hilarious, and has such a sincere desire to be a good missionary
and to work hard, which is exactly what I was hoping for. We’ve been
having a great time together so far, and I’m really looking forward to
this next transfer.

Something that was really cool this week was that I got to go to
Nottingham again. Elder Haynie got transferred to one of the
Nottingham teams, so I spent the day there on Wednesday with the zone
leaders while I waited for Elder Jones to arrive from Birmingham. I
got to see Lemon and Hellen again which was so great. It honestly just
amazes me how much Lemon has come out of her shell since we started
teaching her. You should have seen her in our first lesson, she was
the most shy person and could barely understand what we were saying.
Now she understands everything and is just so funny. I can’t even
begin to explain how much these relationships mean to me.

Another highlight was being able to play basketball with Kevin. It was
so fun, and he’s actually really good. I didn’t expect a guy as big as
him to be able to shoot as well as he does, but he was making three
pointers like it was nothing. Much to my chagrin, he even beat me in
HORSE, but it was a close game. It was great to be able to do that
with him and just continue to strengthen our relationship. One thing
that was awesome when Elder Haynie was saying goodbye to him was when
he quoted fast and furious seven (one of his favourite movies) and
said, “I don’t have friends, only family” and then hugged both of us.
I love that guy so much.

I had to give a talk in sacrament meeting yesterday, and my topic was
“awareness and blessings of personal accountability.” It was an
interesting topic, but I felt like the talk went well and I was able
to learn a lot. A lot of what I based my talk off of was Elder D. Todd
Christofferson’s General Conference talk in October of 2014. He talks
all about agency and accountability. It’s a really good one for those
of you who haven’t heard it. I learned a lot on how we need to be
AGENTS, and not OBJECTS. When we are an agent, we control objects and
have freedom to choose. When we are an object, we let things act upon
us and control us. Many people don’t realise that they are objects,
but when we can recognise that and choose to be agents, that is when
we will experience true freedom and lasting joy.

Other than that, we have continued to find new people to teach, which
we are excited about. I love Lincoln so much, and I’m so glad to be
with Elder Jones for my last transfer. I just want to finish as strong
as I can. Man I’m just so grateful for my mission. Thank you all for
your love and support. Have a great week!

Love, Elder DeBeikes

IPADS! Nottingham! Lemon! Elder Alldredge! (Week 96)

From: Nathan DeBeikes <nathan.debeikes@myldsmail.net>

Dearest family and friends, hello! This has been a pretty good week.
Unfortunately, Kevin didn’t feel ready for his baptism quite yet, so
we rescheduled for the 14th of June, and I really really believe he
will be able to make it for that. He is still the coolest person ever
and I freakin love that guy. So this week we officially got IPADS! We
still aren’t able to use them proselyting yet, but we should be able
to in the next couple days. It’s really cool, it feels weird having
technology like this again. Weird that I’ll only have it for my last
six weeks, but whatever. Speaking of my last six weeks, transfers are
this week. Can you believe it? I feel like we JUST had transfers, time
is going by so incredibly fast. We both think that Elder Haynie will
probably leave, seeing as though I just got here. We’ll find out
tonight what will happen though, I’m super excited to see what will
happen for my LAST transfer. I can’t believe I actually just said
that. I just don’t really believe that I will ever actually go home.
Yesterday was a really good day at church, President and Sister
Rasmussen were there and spoke in sacrament meeting, which was
excellent. They are two of the most amazing people I have ever met in
my life, I really love them. Whenever they speak, you can just feel
the love that they have for each of us missionaries.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, I went on exchange in Nottingham with Elder
Alldredge on Tuesday! Holy smokes, it was SO cool to be back there for
a day. As soon as I walked into the flat, I was just flooded with all
the memories of serving there. I absolutely love that place. We were
able to see Lemon, Jia Jia, and Viet. Unfortunately, Ariel was back in
Tobago for a couple weeks, and Leon had already gone back to China.
Seeing Lemon was amazing, she is one of my favourite people ever. She
has grown SO much since the last time I saw her, it was so amazing to
see how much the church has helped her. I love experiences like that.
Jia Jia also told me that she will be getting baptised in June! I
can’t believe it! I’m just so grateful for Nottingham, and for the
people I met there and the incredible experiences I had with Elder
Alldredge, that place is like my second home.

I’m just so so grateful for all the amazing times I have had on my
mission, and being able to witness how the gospel of Jesus Christ can
change people’s lives. I love the gospel with all my heart, and I
absolutely love being a missionary. I’m looking forward to my last
transfer, and I hope you all have a great week!

Love, Elder DeBeikes

Yang’s House We Played Chinese Card Game San Guo Sha (Week 95)

Subject: Yang’s House We Played Chinese Card Game San Guo Sha

Hello hello! Well this has been a very good week. I’ll just go through some of the highlights.

So on Monday we had dinner ant this American family’s home, which was awesome. THey both went to BYU, so you can guess how that went. They love BYU football so much. THey are a really fun young family.

On Tuesday we were able to help a member from Taiwan with her alotment, that was really fun, we also saved a snake that was trapped in some netting. Pretty random. Pei Wen, the member, is so cool though. She is just one of the nicest people I have ever met. She took us out to a chinese buffet afterward which was really good. I’m just so grateful fo the chance to meet people like her on my mission. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing some of these people that I met are.

On Wednesday we had a lesson with Kevin, which was so great. He told us how he was able to repent for the first time for some of the things he has done wrong in his life, and he said the peace that he felt was amazing, and that he just felt so relaxed about everything. It’s so amazing to see how he can go from not knowing much a bout God, to being able to feel the Holy GHost so strongly and knowing so much. He is one of the coolest guys I have ever taught. We saw him again yesterday, and we talked about his baptism, which is scheduled for this next sunday. He told us that he is really really nervous for it, but he knows it is something he should do. He told us that he is doing to be praying a lot about it and will elt us know on Thursday after his exam. Just keep him in your prayers.

Another highlight of the week was going to Yang’s house on Friday with the other Lincoln elders. Yang is another Chinese investigator who is SO cool. We went to his house and played this Chinese card game called San Guo Sha, which is extremely famous in China. It’s probably the coolest card game that I have ever played, and it’s impossible to explain over email. We had a really good time playing it with him though, and it was a really good way of being able to strengthen our relationship with him and see more of his personality come out.

Other than that, we have just been continuing to try to find people to teach. It’s been good, Lincoln is a great place and we are able to find new people each week who are interseted. Life is very great at the moment, I love my misison so much, have a great week!

Kevin – Biggest Chinese Guy I Have Ever Seen (Week 93)

Subject: Kevin – Biggest Chinese Guy I Have Ever Seen

Hello everyone! This has been another great week in Lincoln. I love it here. I’ll just go through some of the highlights.

So on Wednesday we had our mission wide conference in one of the Birmingham chapels, which was amazing. It was so cool to be able to see all of the missionaries together, only the second time that’s happened on my mission. It was a really long day of travels though. We actually had to spend the night in Nottingham on Tuesday because the coach left so early. We stayed with two Tongan Elders, Elder Tupuo and Elder Palu. They are some of the funniest guys I have ever met. It was actually Elder Palu’s birthday, so they had a huge barbecue in their backyard, and some of the other elders in Notts came over as well. It was awesome. Anyway, we had to wake up at 3:30 the next morning to be able to get to Nottingham train station, where the coach picked us up at 5:45. We stopped at Leicester and Coventry along the way to pick up the missionaries serving there, then finally arrived in Birmingham around 9:15. The conference was great. Elder Dyches from the Seventy and Elder Ellen, the managing director of the missionary department, were there and spoke to us. They talked a lot about iPads and how everything is going to work when we get them into the mission, but they also just talked about how we can improve as missionaries and be the best that we can. It was really inspiring, they are two amazing men. So the conference was great, and afterwards we had lunch, then had to travel all the way back, and didn’t get back home in Lincoln until about 9pm, so that was our whole day.

Another highlight has been teaching Kevin, a chinese student. He is probably the biggest Chinese guy I have ever seen. He’s about an inch taller than me, and weighs about 285 pounds. he’s one of the funniest people on the planet, and has really sincere desire to learn more. I think one of the coolest things about him is that he plays American Football for Lincoln University! how crazy is that? He lived in Denver for a year and a half, and fell in love with American Football. So we played with him and the other elders on Saturday, which was so much fun. He came to church for the first time yesterday, and absolutely loved it. I’m excited for his future.

Well I don’t want to bore you too much with random details, especially because I can skype you in 6 days, but honestly life is great. Well I can’t wait to skype, talk to you then, and have a great week!

Love, Elder DeBeikes

Six Dinner Appointments This Week. SIX! Lincoln Is Awesome (Week 92)

Subject: Six Dinner Appointments This Week. SIX! Lincoln Is Awesome

What up everyone! Man, life is great at the moment. This past week has been so so good, and I am so happy. Lincoln is awesome, I am loving it so much. It is a really cool city, and really beautiful. We work a lot around the university, which is right next to the city centre, so everything is really close, it’s perfect. And the cathedral is right there in view on top of a massive hill, it’s just really cool. And the people here are so cool. There is just a really laid back type of feeling here, it reminds me a lot of Loughborough, it’s great.

We are working with a lot of really cool people at the moment, there are loads of chinese students around who are great and way open to learning more. Elder Haynie is so great, we are having a blast together and the work is moving along great. Honestly life couldn’t get much better at the moment, I can’t believe I actually get to finish my mission like this. Yesterday at church I met so many members who came up and introdused themselves, and they all seem really excited about missionary work. And we have six dinner appointments this week. SIX! that’s the most I’ve ever had my whole mission. This place doesn’t seem real…

It’s hard to think of specifics of what has happened this week, it’s all gone by so quickly. This week on wednesday we are having a mission wide conferecne in Birmingham all about getting iPads, so that should be exciting. We should be getting iPads really soon, so I can use one for the last two months of my mission….cool.

So yeah, just want you guys to know that I am happy, I love the gospel and the joy which it brings. I love seeing the Book of Mormon play a powerful role in the conversion of others. I am so grateful for the restoration which was brought about through Joseph Smith. I love you all and hope you have a great week!

Love, Elder DeBeikes

So this is like the only picture I have taken in Lincoln so far, I’ll try to take more this week. But this was up at the cathedral, was so cool.

I GOT TRANSFERRED! To Lincoln! (Week 91)

Subject: I GOT TRANSFERRED! To Lincoln!

Hello hello! So first things first….I GOT TRANSFERRED! Sorry I totally forgot to tell you that p day was changed this week….haha….awkward. Anyway, transfers were yesterday, so I have been in my new area since last night. My new area is Lincoln! It’s really close to Nottingham, and I actually went on a few exchanges here when I was in Nottingham. Every time I went on exchange here I thought about how cool it would be if I ever served here. I honestly can’t believe it, this place is so amzing, and I am SO incredibly excited. Lincoln is a beautiful city, with an amazing cathedral, and a university! So I will still get to teach people from all over the world. My new companion is Elder Haynie, and he and I were in the mtc together, so he’ll go home in July as well. He was in my district in Notts, so we are already really good frineds. I just couldn’t believe it when I got the call. I can’t even tell you all how excited I am for my last two transfers, they are going to be so awesome. I’ll send pictures of it next week.

Swansea was great, and I had a really good six weeks there, but it wasn’t too hard to say goodbye because I had barely just gotten there. I think I will miss Shaun and Caitlin the most, they are two of the best friends that I have made on my mission, and I love the memories that we created together. They will be amazing members for the rest of their lives. Elder Bos was great, and I’m really grateful I got to serve with him.

Last week was pretty hectic, I got to go on exchange in Llanelli again, which was strange again. Then I went on exchange in Brimingham, which is three hours away, then we got the transfer info on Friday, and I had to pack on Saturday and Sunday, then yesterday I took a four hour long coach ride from Swansea to Brimingham, then a three hour long coach ride to Nottingham, then an hour train ride to Lincoln, and a half hour cycle to our flat. We got home at about 9pm. Long day, but I am so glad to be here. We are going to have such a good time. Life is so good. The gospel is great, and I can’t wait to share it with all the people of Lincoln! Love you guys and have a great week!

Oh yeah, and I’m back on a bike! I’m so happy about that, it will be so fun to ride around during the summer and get a bit back in shape before I get home! Life is good, love you!
